Utilities experts explain why Texas-type electrical
grid failure is unlikely to occur in Arizona

A wave of intense cold, snow and ice hit
Texas on Feb. 15 and heavily impacted the
Texas electrical grid, leaving millions of
citizens in unheated, dark homes for days
afterward. Could such an occurrence happen
in Arizona? Not likely, say Arizona’s
three major electric utility companies.
The North American power grid is made
up of three components: the Western Interconnection
, the Eastern Interconnection,
and the ERCOT Interconnection, which is
managed by the Electric Reliability Council
of Texas and covers most of that state.
“Texas is a stand-alone grid,” said Chris
Hoffman, director of transmission and generation
operations at Salt River Project
(SRP). “They don’t have an interconnect to
help them out like in the Western and Eastern
Interconnections. With the Texas situation

lines of business, expanding work into other states
Canyon State Electric Co. Inc., a familyowned
electrical contracting business in
Phoenix, is celebrating its 43rd year in
business and strengthening its foundations,
starting new lines of business, and doing
more work in neighboring southwestern
states.
The company offers commercial electrical
, new installation and design-build services
for its customers, which include retail
and office buildings, public facilities,
schools and universities, hospitals, hotels,
resorts, spas, casinos, residential complexes
, and tenant improvements.

Canyon State Electric is expanding its services in the Southwest.
Canyon State Electric was started by
founder Steve Maderazzo, who continues
with the company, along with co-chief
executive officers, Stephanie Maderazzo
Hughes and Christopher Maderazzo,
Steve’s daughter and son. Since its founding
, Canyon State Electric has grown from
a one person shop to a multi-million dollar
company, now employing more than 170
employees working out of a facility at 4640
E. McDowell Rd., in Phoenix.
Chris Maderazzo noted the company’s
major growth focus this year is on revenue.
