NAECA holds 10th Wiring Challenge in Flagstaff

Twenty-two students showcased their
skills in front of contractors, community
members and media at Anixter Flagstaff on
June 13 as they competed in the 10th annual
Northern Arizona Electrical Contractors
Association (NAECA) Wiring Challenge.
This year’s teams featured a Level 4 student
wiring up a parking lot fixture to the
boards using a light switch, contactor and
photo cell, while Level 7 students served as
the “supervisor” over several Level 4 students
, said Catherine Miller, NAECA
administrator. Level 7 supervisors had to
turn on each light and if it did not work,
troubleshoot and get it to work. Adding to
the challenge was that some parts were
rigged not to work.
Jim Anderson, president of AEC Electric
and NAECA spokesperson said the annual
event is important for the apprenticeship
program.
“This competition brings awareness to
the apprenticeship program and showcases
the advances in talent the apprentices are
learning in the program,” Anderson said.
Competitors are all students in the
NAECA Electrical Apprenticeship Program
and compete at levels according to the class
they have recently completed.
“We strongly encourage every apprentice
to compete,” Miller said, “But some
end up with prior commitments and are not
able to attend.”
This year’s first place team included
Kyle Marquez, Level 7 of Goodman Electric
; Corbin Felsted, Level 4 of Goodman

340 Megawatt solar data center being built in Mohave County
Alan M. Petrillo
A 340 Megawatt solar powered data center
is being constructed in the Golden Valley
area of Mohave County by Pegasus Group
Holdings, a technology infrastructure corporation
headquartered in Las Vegas that develops
renewable energy projects, in partnership
with Plus Minus Power (PMP), a company
that creates, manages, maintains and monetizes
renewable energy to help change the
way people use and store energy.
Dan Briggs, chief executive officer of
Pegasus Group Holdings and PMP, said the
$3 billion project will install and operate a
solar field of 16,000 mobile solar generators
nicknamed “the Hive,” on 717 acres
south of Kingman on Interstate 40, just
north of the Griffith Energy Facility.
On June 13 in Flagstaff, 22 NAECA students competed in the annual Wiring Challenge.
Pegasus Group Holdings owns and operates
renewable energy-based hyperscale
data center ecosystems for enterprise colocation
, differentiated multi-cloud, industryleading
telecommunications solutions, disaster
recovery services and off-site data
storage solutions for a variety of corporate
clients, Briggs pointed out. PMP owns and
builds micro grids for storage solutions and
energy efficiencies to meet power needs.
Briggs said that tenants of the Hive may
include cryptocurrency miners, medical
companies providing human genome mapping
sequencing, movie studies rendering
3D feature films, as well as disaster recovery
and data storage services. He added that
any remaining power from the facility can
be transferred into the national or local
Artist’s rendering of the mobile solar generators at the Kingman site. See ‘Data center’ page 7
